Cockroach Control
Size: Adults are about 1/2-inch in length. Color: Male is light brown. The female may have dark brown wings. Both sexes, however, have the lighter-colored bands running across the wings directly behind the prothorax. The female and male brown banded cockroaches do not look much alike. The male is long and thin, while the female is more oval in shape.
Like all cockroaches that invade buildings, this species prefers to spend much of its time resting in cracks and voids. Most of its activity will occur at night when it feels safe to move about in search of food and water. The brown banded cockroach does not seem to require as much moisture as German cockroaches, and therefore may be found in rooms other than kitchens and bathrooms. Brown banded cockroaches are omnivorous and will eat anything that possesses organic matter, even organic glues used in books and cabinets.
Brown banded cockroaches are far less common than German cockroaches and are usually found in apartments, motels, and long-term care facilities. Like German cockroaches, these will be found in kitchens and bathrooms. However, because brown banded cockroaches can survive in drier areas, they will also be found in bedrooms, living rooms, closets, bookcases, etc. This behavior can make the brown banded cockroach a bit more difficult to control.
Controlling these roaches can be accomplished in the same manner as those with German Roaches. Formulations available for roach control include: Aerosols & Ready To Use Products, Spray Concentrates, Dust Insecticides, Baits, Insecticide Granules, Insect Growth Regulators, or Insect Traps.

Insect Growth Regulators
IGR’s (Insect Growth Regulators) disrupt the normal development of certain insects. When exposed to IGR’s the insect will become adults incapable of reproducing, thus ending the cycle of an infestation. Use IGR’s in areas such as, but not limited to: apartment buildings, hospitals, residential homes, hotels/motels, nursing homes, and marine vessels. Do not treat linens and mattresses.

Treating For Brown Banded Roaches
Baiting for Roaches will provide you with good results. It does require some persistence, patience, and sanitary conditions. Maxforce Gel Roach Bait and Alpine Roach Gel has had great success in controlling roaches in many different situations. Both are labeled to be used in homes, nursing homes, restaurants, hospitals and apartments. It is very safe around pets and children and the purchase of this bait requires no special license, either to buy or apply it.
Non-repellent insecticides such as Phantom Aerosol or Phantom Concentrate will also work well inside. These powerful non-repellent ingredients will allow pests to forage right over it and then spread it to other insects hidden behind walls or in their home colony, killing every other pest they come in contact with. These products are virtually odorless, clear in color and provides superior pest control with a long-lasting residual.
Temprid FX from Bayer has been providing great results with all sorts of Roaches. It combines the fast-acting, broad-spectrum control of beta-cyfluthrin (Tempo) with the systemic residual control of imidacloprid to provide premium performance and efficacy.
For increased control, use and apply several Maxforce FC Bait Stations to areas where roaches are hiding.
Also, place and utilize the Victor Pheromone Sticky Traps to catch and monitor your roach populations.
Use the Crusader Bellows Duster to apply your dusts such as Drione or Delta Dust into those tight spots or hard to reach places.
In kitchens, apply gel baits to:
- Drawers- Alongside the interior of the door frame
- Cupboards- Underneath selected cupboards where frame meets wall
- Counter- Underneath counter where sink is located
- Fume Hood- Along the inside rear corner of hood (ensure no gel will drip onto stove top)
- Sink- Alongside pipe collar where drainpipe enters wall
- Floor- under baseboards, or under cabinets and vanities
In bathrooms, apply gel to:
- Toilet- Alongside toilet where it meets the floor (if its not caulked)
- Toilet- Behind inlet pipe collar
- Cabinets and vanities- Behind mirrors, behind or under cabinets, alongside where the vanity meets the wall
- Sink- Alongside pipe collar where drainpipe enters the wall
- Sink- Upward angle into the overflow drain
- Shower- Behind pipe collars and areas not properly sealed or caulked
- Medicine Cabinet- Inside interior vents
This sample diagram of an average kitchen, displays some common areas where you can apply Roach Gel
as well as Maxforce Roach Bait Stations.
Victor Pheromone Sticky Traps can be used for monitoring purposes. You can move them around to try and
locate most of your activity or to see how you are progressing. If you are seeing fewer and fewer roaches in
your traps, you are probably making headway in that area!
Additional Tips for Control –
Cockroaches require plenty of food, water, and shelter in order to thrive. Limiting any one of these necessities makes it more difficult for cockroach populations to become established and escalate in size.
The following steps are helpful in preventing and limiting cockroach infestations:
- Inspect all incoming food goods, boxes, and used furniture and appliances for the presence of cockroaches or their egg capsules. Remove any cockroaches or egg capsules using a vacuum or otherwise killing the insects.
- In commercial facilities, avoid storing food items in cardboard boxes on shelves. Cardboard is a preferred harborage site for cockroaches.
- In homes, do not store paper bags under the sink or elsewhere in the kitchen. Store bags in the garage or room other than the kitchen, utility room, or bathrooms.
- Seal holes or cracks around plumbing pipes under sinks, behind toilets, etc.
- Regularly vacuum and clean floors under kitchen appliances.
