Controlling carpet beetles
Size: Tiny, round beetles with larvae that grow up to 1/4-inch in length; the adults grow to 1/16-inch. Color: While generally tan in color, they are covered by tiny black, brown, and white scales, and have numerous tufts of stiff hairs on the body. Carpet beetles, while in their larval stage, can sometimes cause irreparable damage to personal belongings. Larvae of these beetles are able to digest animal hairs and, therefore, feed on almost any item made of natural fibers, particularly wool and cashmere.
Outdoors, they may be found feeding off of the pollen on certain ornamentals. Flowering shrubs such as spirea and pyracantha, are particularly attractive to adult carpet beetles. Indoors, these pests will be associated with woolen, silk, and other natural fiber fabrics. Carpet beetles may also be found living under carpets and rugs and in voids where hairs or dead insects have accumulated.
After vacuuming cracks and crevices in closets and other rooms infested, a non residual aerosol such as 565 or CB-80 can be applied to rugs, carpets, and the undersides of cloth furniture. This should kill any existing adults or larvae. A residual insecticide such as Suspend, or Tempo SC could be applied to cracks, crevices, or underneath the baseboards.
Treating entry points on the exterior with a residual insecticide such as Tempo or Suspend, can help prevent adult beetles from making their way inside.
