Yellowjackets

Characteristics

Yellowjackets are often misidentified by people as being bees.  Unlike our friends the bees, Yellowjackets are not golden brown in color, but are bright yellow with jagged bands of black.  They are about 3/4-to 1-inch in length.  Generally small wasps with black and yellow stripes.

Habitat and Behavior

Yellowjackets are social insects that live in colonies that can contain thousands of individuals. Colonies are usually started by a single queen in the early spring, and are very small for the first couple of months. By midsummer, a colony located on or near a house is usually large enough to become a nuisance.

These wasps will aggressively attack when their nest is disturbed, and can inflict painful stings. Unlike the honeybee, which stings only one time and then dies, a single yellow jacket can sting many times.

Yellowjackets are scavengers and can be beneficial when located in a wooded area or a field. Colonies located in or near a home, however, can pose a threat to the persons living in the house. When this situation is discovered, the colony or colonies should be eliminated.

Yellowjackets prefer to locate their nests in the ground (See the thumbnail at right), usually in an old rodent burrow, under a railroad tie, or in cider block walls. This wasp also commonly locates its nest inside the walls of a building by entering through cracks or holes in the outside walls.

Control

Treatments should be done at night, because they are all in the nest. They don't see well at night and your chances of being stung are greatly reduced. Be sure to always wear protective equipment. Treat the entrance quickly with Wasp Freeze, Delta Dust, or Drione and leave quickly.

Check the nest the following day, to see if the yellow jackets are indeed dead by lack of activity.  It may be necessary to repeat treatment the following evening.

If all the yellowjackets are gone, dust in the opening with Drione Dust or Delta Dust. This dust will continue to kill for months and eliminate any new hatch outs.  Use the Crusader to apply your dusts.

The EPA recently approved Termidor for targeting yellow jackets.  Termidor was originally designed for termites, and sequentially for ants.  It is a great product for social insects, and it is proving itself again as a great tool for treating yellow jackets.  While it is NOT a knock down product, it is extremely effective at colony elimination.  Termidor is simply the best.

To prevent Yellowjackets from getting established on you property, regularly treat the exterior with a residual insecticide such as Tempo SC, or Suspend, or Delta Dust.  Focus on treating cracks, crevices, voids, plumbing penetrations, etc.  Remember, yellowjackets prefer to nest in the ground, so treat the holes/cracks in railroad ties, bricks, walls, or any other potential harborage site.
